7 Days Great Migration Safari
Description
This 7-day itinerary is strategically designed for the peak crossing season (typically July to October), focusing on the Northern Serengeti's Mara River. It prioritizes "slow safari" principles - staying longer at sightings to capture the perfect light and behavioral sequences and this itinerary is designed for Photographers but any client can use this itinerary.
Itinerary
Day 1 Arrival in Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be transferred to your hotel in Arusha. The evening includes a technical briefing to discuss about preparation of tomorrow, and the week's expected herd movements.
Photography Focus: Gear check and orientation.
Day 2 Arusha to Central Serengeti (Seronera)
Take a scenic drive to the Central Serengeti. This region acts as a transition zone for the herds and is the "Big Cat Capital" of the park. Spend the afternoon capturing predators—lions and leopards—often found perched on the Moru Kopjes (granite outcrops).
Photography Focus: Using "Kopjes" as dramatic backdrops for predator portraits.
Overnight: Will be at Sightseeing lodge located at Central Serengeti.
Day 3 Northward Bound to Kogatende
Head further north toward the Mara River sector. As you enter the Kogatende area, you will begin to see the "mega-herds" gathering. The landscape shifts to rolling hills and open woodland, providing excellent depth of field for wide-angle landscape shots of the migration.
Photography Focus: Wide-angle "environmental portraits" of the endless wildebeest lines.
Day 4 - 5 The Mara River Crossings
These days are dedicated entirely to the riverbanks. Patience is the photographer’s greatest tool here. You will wait for the "build-up"—when thousands of wildebeest congregate on the bank before the first brave individual plunges in.
Highlights: Capturing the chaos of the crossing, Nile crocodiles in action, and the dramatic dust clouds at the exit points.
Photography Focus: High shutter speeds to freeze the splashing water and action; panning shots to convey the frantic movement.
Overnight: Will be at North Serengeti
Day 6 Predators of the North
Where the herds gather, the predators follow. Today focuses on the high concentration of lions, cheetahs, and hyenas that patrol the river scanning for exhausted or injured animals. We will also explore the Lamai Wedge for secluded sightings and unique angles of the Mara River.
Photography Focus: Action sequences of predator-prey interaction and lowangle shots for an intimate perspective.
Day 7 Last Light and Departure
Enjoy one final "golden hour" game drive at sunrise to capture the Serengeti silhouettes. After a bush breakfast, transfer to the Kogatende Airstrip for your flight back to Arusha, connecting to your international departure.
Photography Focus: Sunrise silhouettes and backlight techniques.
